Chapter Twelve

April 10th, 2003

Trevor

“I wish you would’ve told me we would be traipsing through the weeds. I would’ve worn pants.”

“But then I wouldn’t get to see your beautiful legs,” I say, nodding down at them, and she rolls her eyes.

“Flattery will get you nowhere, Trevor,” she says, aggravated that we’re walking through weeds as tall as her and hoping they lead somewhere soon.

“Oh, no?” I ask, sticking out my bottom lip, pouting.

“No! And don’t pout. It’s not becoming of you,” she replies, trying to keep a straight face but loses it when I do.

“What does that even mean?” I ask, laughing so hard I have to hold my stomach. She slaps my shoulder when I bend at the knee to catch my breath.

“You know what I mean,” she says. I wrap my arms around her waist and pull her to me.

“How did I ever live life without you?”

“I don’t know but I bet it was very difficult.” She laughs and my heart fills with happiness. Happiness that I’ve never felt before.

“It was. And lonely,” I add. She knows I’m joking but her eyes turn sad with that statement and I fucking hate it. I hate people pitying me. I especially hate K pitying me.

“Well, no more. From here out, I’ll help you through life, and neither of us will ever be lonely again,” she says and I hope she’s telling the truth.

“You promise?”

“I promise,” she replies. I smile small because I don’t trust too many people, but I trust every word that falls from her mouth—her beautiful mouth that I love so much. “I just have one question for you?” she says, interrupting my thoughts.

“Anything, beautiful.”

“Where are you taking me?”

“Follow me and you’ll see,” I say, smiling wide, ready to get going.

“Ugh! Why can’t you just tell me? I’ve been following you, and so far, we’ve only been walking through weeds.”

“Because then it wouldn’t be a surprise,” I say, grabbing her hand and taking off toward the woods that are just ahead. We run in silence and she sprints to keep up with me. We enter the woods, weaving between trees and stepping over logs embedded in the ground. “Almost there,” I whisper, moving a branch out of her way. My heart pounds with anticipation. I come back here a lot to clear my mind after a long night, or a bad day at home, but I’ve never brought anyone with me. I’ve thought about her so much while here and now she’s here with me, it’s like a dream come true…if I believed in dreams. We move past a branch, into a large area of brush, and Keda stops. “What’s wrong?” I ask.

“Where’s that sound coming from?” she asks but covers my mouth when I start to answer her question. Silence falls around us except for the beautiful sound of water falling. “Where are you taking me, Trevor Davis?” she asks, smiling and taking off without me. I smile and can’t wait to see her face when she finds what’s beyond the tree line.
